Critical Perspectives Seminar 1: 8/1/15

Work today will help with next week
Women as Objects” - arguments are ALIVE
This will help you understand the POINT of writing

4 TASKS:
Ask:
What's the reading ABOUT? → How men have always looked at women and how women see themselves - “Women... experience themselves as more visible”
What do you understand about [the author's] ideas?
What are the similarities/differences between the ideas? → They differ because of time periods, but revolve around the same theme (a conversation going on throughout history)

5 KEY WORDS (you should be able to find more than 5)
  • GAZE
  • WOMEN (as)
  • OTHER
  • PSYCHOANALYTIC
  • REPRESENTATION
  • SURVEYOR/SURVEY
  • LOOKING

3 KEY QUOTES (extract information) What's the main argument?
  • Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at”* - John Berger
  • To be born a woman... is to be born into the keeping of men”* - Berger
  • A gaze which each individual under its weight well end by interiorizing to the point that he is his own overseer” - Michel Foucault

*Quotes [that are quoted] within the text – okay but don't do it all the time

The text is from 1995 – society hasn't changed THAT much since then → People who grew up in the 90s bring the same traditions into the 2010s → consider the environment in which a text was written!
The idea of a “modern woman” who can do everything has emerged

Did you know: humans have the smallest gender dimorphism of any species? → ironically they make the biggest deal of gender of any species

Feminism isn't a “thing” - it's a DISCOURSE (no right or wrong answers)
Ideas are ALIVE – students will create the next generation of themselves

By next Thurs.: Write a paragraph that summarizes the argument
Extract and edit! (200-400 words – not too detailed) Like a film trailer
