Semester 2 sketchbook!

I kept three sketchbooks this semester: a small one for observational and imaginative sketches, a big one for notes and doodles, and my action analysis sketchbook. Click Read More to see most of the drawings from the first one!

This is the odd drawing out because it's not actually in my sketchbook, but a piece of scrap paper: I got locked out of my room one night and had to spend the evening in my building's communal area, drawing with nothing but a ballpoint pen and printer paper. It was raining that day, so I got inspired to draw the cast of Mudskipper with umbrellas.

This is a value study for a page of Mudskipper, accompanied by a quick study of the view from my window, both in black and white watercolour paint. Click here to see the finished page!

The above three spreads are an exercise I did to solidify the designs of the Mudskipper cast: I mapped out the straits (in red) and curves (in blue) in their designs. I go into more detail on why here.

For the last few pages of my sketchbook, I tried out a technique I learned from a classmate on the Access to HE course I took from 2012-14: ageing paper in tea to create a midtone. It's always interesting to see what effects you get, since no two sheets of paper are the same (those five "lights" in the spread above are a good example).
